Pros and cons of gold fillings

Author: Sharon Bell

Want to feel like a million dollars? Why not get a gold filling? Dental records taken from the U.S. Civil War era in the 1800s show that gold was the most popular and most preferred filler because of its strength and durability.

Although other filling materials such as tin and amalgam is present and less expensive, gold remains the "gold standard" in those days and other materials were held in low regard.

However, getting a gold filling in the early days was a nightmare, especially because it was difficult to place. As Dr. Martin S. Spiller reveals Dr.Spiller.Com:

"Cohesion gold foil technique involved the removal of caries, laboriously refining (manufacture) the shape of the cavity and then hitting small pieces of gold foil cohesion in it until the cavity preparation was full – a tedious and painful. It requires removal of all decay and refinement minutes from the cavity preparation in order to create an area of retention and stable for the gold. "

Fortunately, advances in modern dentistry has changed all that. Gold is still used today, since they can withstand the forces of chewing and last as long as 15 to 30 years. Gold is also pleasing to the eye and some people find it more acceptable than other fillers.

On the negative side, gold is quite expensive – up to ten times the cost of amalgam fillings is more common. It requires at least two visits to the dentist to another and can be irritating to some people, and that conducts heat and cold.

"A gold filling placed right next to a silver amalgam filling can cause a sharp pain (galvanic shock) occur. The interaction between the metals and saliva, produces an electric current to occur – is a rare event, however, "he told the editors WebMD.Com and the Department of Dentistry at the Cleveland Clinic.

Or silver amalgam fillings are still the leading material to fix decayed teeth. They are a mixture of mercury (43 to 54 percent) and powdered alloy made mostly of silver, tin, zinc and copper. Amalgam was allegedly used by the Chinese to fill teeth in the 7th century, but the French Auguste Taveau dentist is recognized as the inventor of this material.

In 1816, Taveau developed its own blend of filled with silver coins and mercury, which was first used in 1826. His material was cheaper than gold but had to be heated to dissolve the silver and put into underway. I also had a tendency to expand after it is placed. Because of this, its use was abandoned.

"Amalgam in the first days had serious drawbacks since its physical characteristics depend on the exact proportions of silver and mercury, and the mixture often expanded on the configuration causing the tooth to crack, "said Spiller.

Taveau formula was later brought to America by two French healers. The brothers Crawcour Many dentists saw its potential and packaged under the name "Royal mineral substitute. denounced as the brothers had no such training dental and warned that mercury was poisonous. But this does not affect the business of the brothers.

"When the brothers Crawcour opened in New York 1833, which do not have to wait long for their first customers. For anyone with dental problems, announcements of the brothers were irresistible. Why pay a fortune to have your cavities plugged with gold, when two talented European dentists could fix with a new kind of miracle-filled. With its impressive Royal mineral succedaneum, could cause a tooth like new – low cost, painless and in just two minutes, "according to Stephanie Pain in New Scientist.

Despite criticism that later formed the basis of the fight against amalgam of movement, the brothers Crawcour treated many patients successfully – none of whom developed symptoms of mercury poisoning. How does this not happen? This clearly illustrates the relative ease security in the placement of fillings amalgam, and durability that can extend to 15 years.
